June 2024 Automotive Recall News

June was a notable month for vehicle recalls in the US, with several manufacturers issuing notices across a wide range of vehicles. From defective airbags, and software glitches to faulty electronics and incorrect tire installations, the reasons for these recalls are broad.

Here are the June automotive recall news for the US.

Here’s a quick roundup of June's key recalls you should be aware of if you own or are considering purchasing a used vehicle from these batches.

Which Vehicles Were Recalled in June?

➡️ Driverge Ford Transit Vans

Driverge Vehicle Innovations has issued a recall for certain 2023-2024 Ford T-350 transit vans equipped with GO-ES Space Saver Foldaway Seats. The concern involves a recliner mechanism that may fail to engage when the seatback is fully reclined, posing safety risks during travel.

➡️ Toyota

Toyota recalled certain 2024 Lexus RX and 2024-2025 Lexus NX vehicles due to issues with the head restraints, which may be removable without pressing the release button. Additionally, Toyota issued recalls for the 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander and Lexus TX vehicles concerning the curtain shield airbag on the driver’s side, which may not deploy correctly during a crash if the driver's window is rolled down.

➡️ Stellantis Extensive Recall

A major recall involves over 1 million vehicles across the Stellantis brand umbrella — including Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram — due to a software glitch that affects rear-view cameras. This issue, caused by faulty radio software, prevents the camera's image from displaying, increasing the risk of accidents while reversing. The affected models span several popular vehicles:

  • Chrysler Pacifica

  • Dodge Durango

  • Jeep Compass

  • Jeep Grand Cherokee

  • Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer

  • Ram 1500, 2500, 3500

  • Ram Promaster

To address this, Stellantis is offering a software update. However, it is worth noting that most affected vehicles will require a trip to the dealers for this update, as they lack over-the-air update capabilities.

➡️ Kia

Kia issued a significant recall for 462,869 model year 2020-2024 Telluride vehicles due to a fire risk associated with the front power seat motor. Owners are advised to park these vehicles outside and away from structures until the necessary repairs, including the installation of a new bracket for the power seat switchback covers and replacement of the seat slide knobs, are completed.

➡️ Ford

Ford also had recalls in June, including for 2024 Mustang models equipped with manual transmissions, affecting about 8,161 vehicles. The issue involved a risk of fire from the clutch pressure line, which may have been improperly installed. This follows a recall of 109,000 Lincoln Aviator vehicles where cell phones could cause an issue with the rearview camera and risk a chance of a crash or injury.

➡️ Kovatch Fire Trucks

Kovatch Mobile Equipment Corp. (KME) is recalling specific 2022-2023 models of its Predator fire trucks. A significant safety issue has been identified where an incorrect relay valve may prevent the parking brake from engaging, potentially allowing the vehicle to roll away unexpectedly.

➡️ North Central Emergency Vehicles

A very focused recall affects one 2021 Ford E-450 emergency vehicle equipped with Weldon 8X16 Input-Output nodes. The recall addresses a potential failure in the node’s firmware that could fail to shut off the output pin in the event of a short circuit or wiring failure, leading to overloaded electrical circuits.

➡️ Additional Recalls Noteworthy of Mention

While not officially recalled in June, several manufacturers announced recalls in June that will affect vehicles in the coming months. These include:

  • Daimler Trucks: Freightliner and Western Star models - potential wheel flange issue that could damage the tires.

  • Rivian EVs: 2022-2024 R1T and R1S; 2023-2024 electric delivery vehicles - headlight level error.

  • Mazda: 2024 CX-90 Hybrids - driver-assistance issue.

  • General Motors (GM) Pickup Trucks: 2024 Chevrolet Colorado - possible water leaks into the exterior tailgate switch that could cause a short circuit while parked.

  • Hankook Tires: Kinergy GT tires - manufacturing fault, which could cause tread separation.

  • Mack Trucks: 2025 Mack AN, GR, and TE trucks; 2024 MMDe and MD electric trucks - abrupt loss of steering control due to a manufacturing error.

  • Nissan EVs: 2023 Ariya - defective electric front traction motor, which can result in an internal oil leak leading to an unexpected loss of drive power.

  • Paccar Trucks: Kenworth and Peterbilt models - steering gear issue that could cause loss of control.

  • Tesla EVs: Model S, X, 3, and Y - problems with the automatic steering assist function, which can lead to increased risks of accidents.

  • Volvo Trucks: 2025 VN and VHD models - manufacturing issue with the steering gear, which could result in a sudden loss of steering control.

  • Volkswagen Group: Audi Q4 e-tron - issue with the headlight control module software, which may prevent the parking lights from functioning correctly.

Don't ignore owner notification letters from your dealer or automaker. Even if you don't have a warning light, act fast to avoid any un-expected accidents.

Importance of Regular Recall Checks

Automakers issue recalls when they discover safety defects or malfunctions that can potentially endanger drivers, passengers and other road users. As we have seen, these can range from minor inconveniences to more serious hazards.

To protect yourself and your vehicle, it is important to regularly check for recalls. Automakers are required to comply with strict regulations to notify owners of any safety issues and the remedy for a recall issue is usually provided at no cost to the vehicle owner.

However, it is ultimately the owner’s responsibility to act on these warnings. By staying informed and scheduling necessary repairs, vehicle owners can significantly reduce the risk of accidents or injury.

How to Check for Recalls

Vehicle recalls, while common, highlight the ongoing need for consumers to stay informed about the safety of their vehicles. You can do this in several ways:

  • NHTSA Website: Visit the NHTSA's official website and use their recall lookup tool.

  • Vehicle Manufacturer: Contact your vehicle's manufacturer directly.

  • Dealership: Visit your local dealership and provide your vehicle's VIN.
