October 2024 Automotive Recall News

In October, several significant vehicle recalls were announced in the U.S., impacting several models across various manufacturers. These recalls were primarily due to safety concerns identified by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the manufacturers themselves.

In this blog we outline the most significant October automotive recall news and insight from the industry. Building a genuine connection with readers is essential for creating engaging and impactful content.

Here is a quick summary of the most notable recalls issued during this period.

Which Vehicles Were Recalled in October?

1. Tesla Cybertruck Recall

Tesla recalled around 27,000 Cybertrucks due to delays in the rearview camera display. The image could appear blank for up to 6-8 seconds, posing a collision risk when reversing. Tesla is addressing this issue with a software update.

2. Honda Steering Gearbox Issue

Honda recalled nearly 1.7 million vehicles, including Acura Integras, Honda Civics, CR-Vs and HR-Vs from model years 2022 to 2025, due to a steering gearbox assembly issue. The defect may increase steering resistance, potentially leading to crashes. Owners will be notified by mid-November for free repairs.

3. Honda Recall for Fire Risk Linked to Fuel Pump Component

Honda also announced a recall of approximately 720,000 vehicles in the U.S. due to a fire risk from a cracked fuel pump component, affecting the 2025 Honda Civic and Civic Hybrid, 2023-2024 Honda Accord and 2023-2025 Honda CR-V Hybrid. The defect, traced to a high-pressure fuel pump from supplier Hitachi Astemo, can develop cracks over time, potentially causing a fuel leak. Drivers might notice a strong fuel odor while idling or driving. Free replacements will be available starting in December.

4. Hyundai Nexo Recall

Hyundai recalled nearly every Nexo SUV sold in the U.S. since 2019 due to a potential fire risk associated with a faulty safety device meant to release hydrogen gas if the fuel tanks overheat. The NHTSA reports that this device, made of glass, could crack and prematurely release gas. Hyundai plans to replace it with a metal part and has already begun doing so for Nexos produced from May 2024. Owners are advised to park their vehicles outside away from buildings until the essential fix is completed, with notifications starting December 10.

5. Ram Pickup Trucks Recall

In October, Stellantis recalled approximately 1.5 million Ram pickup trucks due to a software issue that can disable the electronic stability control (ESC). This system is crucial for preventing cars from losing control by managing throttle and brakes during skidding. The affected models include those from 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024. Owners have already started receiving notifications by mail and repairs can be made at Ram dealerships at no cost.

6. Mercedes-Benz GLE SUVs Recall

Mercedes-Benz recalled 10,655 GLE 350 and GLE 450 SUVs from 2021-2022 due to an airbag deployment issue. A wiring error could cause the airbags to deploy too forcefully, posing an injury risk. Dealers will fix the wiring, with notifications expected by late November.

7. Mercedes-Benz Luxury Sedan Recall for Fire and Stalling Risk

Mercedes-Benz has also recalled 27,190 luxury sedans, including the 2021-2023 S580 and Maybach S580, due to a potential risk of stalling or fire. The issue stems from a defect in the Camtronic engine management system, which can result in excess fuel entering certain cylinders. This can cause engine wiring to overheat, potentially melting and leading to stalling or fire. Drivers may see a yellow check engine light if the wiring overheats, though no prior warning signs are evident. Dealers will address the issue with a free software update, and owners will be notified by November 26, 2024.

8. Jeep Hybrid SUVs Recall

Stellantis recalled 154,032 hybrid Jeep Wranglers (2020-2024) and Grand Cherokees (2022-2024) due to fire risks from battery cell damage. Owners are advised to avoid charging and to park away from structures until repairs are made.

9. Porsche Taycan Recall

Porsche recalled 27,527 Taycan EVs (2020-2024) due to potential battery fires linked to a supplier defect. Dealers will replace affected batteries and install diagnostic software to monitor battery performance. Owner notifications are scheduled for late November.

10. Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid Recall

Toyota recalled 42,199 Corolla Cross Hybrids (2023-2024) due to a brake assist loss risk, which could increase stopping distance and the likelihood of a crash. The issue stems from a software error in the brake control ECU, and the recall may expand to other models if the defect is found in similar systems.

11. Kia EV9 SUV Self-Parking Software Recall

Kia has recalled 12,400 2024 EV9 electric SUVs due to a software glitch that could lead to crashes while the vehicle is self-parking. The affected SUVs feature autonomous driving and remote smart parking assist, which may miscalculate stopping distances, potentially causing the vehicle to strike pedestrians or objects. Dealers have been providing a free software update, starting from the end of October.

The shares of Nissan rose significantly after news broke that a hedge fund-linked company acquired a 2.5% stake in the automaker.

Stay Ahead and Protect Your Safety

Staying informed about vehicle recalls is essential for your safety and the well-being of others on the road. Despite the importance of these alerts, around 30% of recalled vehicles go unrepaired, leaving potential hazards unaddressed.

For the latest, most accurate recall information, consider these resources:

  • National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA): The NHTSA, as the official authority on vehicle safety, offers current recall information. Visit their website or sign up for alerts at NHTSA.gov/Alerts to stay informed.

  • Manufacturer Websites: Most automakers have a recalls section on their websites where you can check if your specific vehicle is affected.

  • Vehicle History Reports: Services such as Carfax and AutoCheck reveal a vehicle's recall history.
